Veer Zaara is a 2006 Hindi-language romantic musical drama film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. It stars Shahrukh Khan and his then-wife, Preity Zinta. They play lovers who are parted during the partition of India in 1947 and rejoin years later through the efforts of their children. The movie was critically acclaimed but received mixed to negative reactions from Indian critics due to its content, which some felt was too idealistic about Pakistan's condition following independence. The film was also panned for being cliched. Set during the time of partition in 1947, Veer is a wealthy man married to Zariya who has two children with him, Ailbaaz (Salman Khan) and Zohra (Isha Koppikar). However, he is having an affair with Naseem Khan (Preity Zinta), whom he helps after she gets evicted from her home. But they are separated when India secedes from the British Raj and Pakistan is formed. They reunite after Zariya dies in a car crash and their children bring them together. The movie is based on the experiences of Ashutosh Gowariker, who met Zinta, Khan and Preity Zinta's father on the sets of his first film, "Khandaan" (1994). He first met Zinta in 1994 on the set of Gowariker's directorial debut "Khandaan". The pair instantly hit it off and they remained so until her marriage to Khan in 1997. This led to many trips to Pakistan by Gowariker, who also invited his future wife to be part of his film. Gowariker's wife, Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre, was the second lead in the film. The director said he was very determined to make a film with such a big star cast and such a potentially controversial subject. He said: "With War [in Iraq], it felt like we had lost our humanity and I realized that we need to talk about love. We have made so many violent movies in this country, so I thought I should make something subtle." Gowariker added that he had fully recovered from his 2002 accident, when he suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a car while riding his scooter in Juhu, Mumbai. The film was shot in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Shooting began in February 2006 and ended by June 2006. Many scenes were shot in the Pakistani cities of Lahore and Karachi. The producers initially planned to shoot the film in East Punjab, but could not find any suitable locations there because of rampant property development in the area. Two train compartments, one from Pakistan and one from India, were brought to Sri Lanka for the shooting of a key scene between Khan and Zinta. Khan was reportedly paid $2 million for his role, while Zinta earned $750,000 and Bendre earned $25,000 to appear as Khan's wife. cfa1e77820
