This is the way Soekanto introduces the subject of sociology. He states that he wrote this book because he wanted something to read with his driver when he goes to Jakarta every week. He then writes that although Sociology has become an important field, it is still not popular enough to both natives and non-natives, even with its rich meaning and great contribution to human life. He also writes that most people misunderstand sociology as a science which is dealing with social problems or behaviors. On the other hand, there are some people who thought that Sociology is economics or politics which are dealing with economic matters or political issues. He says that this is a mistake because sociology is different from both economics and politics. He then writes that sociology is a science that deals with the study of the society, behavior, and social situations. He also writes that sociology is a science which interprets man's essence and existence by observing man in the real world rather than in the spiritual world. The second chapter of this book is an introduction about philosophy. This chapter tells us how Soekanto defines philosophy and its parts. Soekanto writes that he defines philosophy as a general study of principles which will create an explanation for everything in life based on four main parts: Logic, Ethics, Metaphysics, and Epistemology. He then writes that philosophy is not a science or an art which is separated from life or doing something, but it involves the way of life for human beings. He also writes that since philosophy concerns itself with principles of everything, it will guide people in their lives. The third chapter of this book is an introduction about the society. This chapter talks about how Soekanto defines society and its parts. Soekanto writes that he defines society as a collection of human beings living in the same geographical location, which share similar culture, interests, objectives, etc., even they do not know each other and they may not be aware themselves as a social unit. He also writes that society is a community which has some type of solidarity that will not be broken. He then talks about the nature of society which is social nature defined as a nature or quality of the human beings who are living together in the same place, on the basis of their common interests, work, culture, etc. The fourth chapter of this book is an introduction about socialization. This chapter tells us how Soekanto defines socialization based on four main parts: Socialization based on birth, education, occupation and religion.
